One of the most valuable pieces of equipment that any detectorist can purchase is a metal detecting shovel. While some will argue that the metal detector itself is more important, however, I disagree. Pretty much any metal detector on the market will find buried treasure, but there is nothing worse than having a sub-par shovel that will not get the job done.
Of course, that means you will have to dig through, no pun intended, the various types of metal detecting shovels out there. Choosing the right shovel for your needs is a matter of finding something that will suit you in the field, not what someone else thinks will work for you.
The first thought is durability. You want to make sure that you are getting the most bang for your buck. Make sure it is made from quality metal. For example, American-made steel is stronger than Chinese-made steel because China adds other elements, for example, since 2015 China adds the element Boron to their steel. Allowing Chinese companies to receive tax rebates, which is great for their profit. However, the element Boron causes welds to crack making for weaker products including metal detecting shovels. My recommendation is to purchase metal detecting shovels made with American-made steel.
The last thing that you want is a shovel that will fail at the worst possible time, like when you are miles from your vehicle in a field and trying to find a target. Be sure that you are looking at the reviews written by people who have actually used the metal detecting shovel to know if it will stand up to the rigors of metal detecting.
Price is also a thought. There is a wide range of prices on metal detecting shovels out there right now, and it is hard to know which one will be the best for you. My advice, stick with what you can comfortably afford. Going over budget is no way to get started metal detecting.
The reputation of the brand is another consideration. While someone may be offering a good price on a shovel does not mean that they are willing to stand behind that same shovel. Look for the brands that offer the best warranty or guarantee and stick with them.
Comfort should be one of the most important things that you consider. Some of the finest shovels may not be the most comfortable for you to use. I, myself, am tall and that is why I choose to go with the larger shovels, to ensure that I am not getting a backache every time I go out hunting. This is also true of the weight of the metal detecting shovel. A shovel that is too heavy will cause fatigue which can cut short a hunt.
So in conclusion, make sure that you are doing the research when looking to buy a metal detecting shovel. There are many options and some great brands out there that will serve you well. Happy metal detecting.
